AMD Outpaces Intel in Winning Contract for PlayStation 6 Chip as Sony Eyes 2028 Release

Sony reportedly chose AMD to supply the chip for the highly anticipated PlayStation 6 in a major tech showdown, beating out industry giant Intel. According to a Reuters report, the decision followed months of intense discussions in 2022, as both companies vied for the lucrative contract. While Broadcom and other contenders were eliminated early, the battle ultimately came down to AMD and Intel. However, Intel’s bid was blocked due to disagreements over profit-sharing from the chip design, which would have been manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).

This win further solidifies AMD’s longstanding relationship with Sony. AMD has already supplied the chips for the PS5 and the upcoming PS5 Pro, ensuring backward compatibility for future PlayStation consoles. Sony’s move is seen as a strategic play to allow gamers to enjoy titles across multiple PlayStation generations, from PS1 to PS5, on the forthcoming PS6.

Sony’s next-generation console, rumored for release in 2028, is eagerly awaited by fans and industry insiders alike. The potential backward compatibility with the PlayStation catalog has been described as a “gamer’s dream.”

Meanwhile, Intel’s chip division continues to face challenges, having posted a $7 billion loss last year while navigating layoffs and delays at its new chip plant in Ohio. Despite securing major clients like Microsoft for its advanced 18A chip process, Intel’s struggles seem to have contributed to its missed opportunity in the PlayStation 6 deal. This contract could have brought in an estimated $30 billion.

While AMD has also lagged behind Nvidia in the AI chip race, the company has made significant strides with its data center products, making up more than half of its sales. AMD’s gaming strategy, which merges RDNA gaming graphics with CNDA data center technology, positions it as a growing force in the gaming world, with its future PS6 chip expected to expand its reach further.

As speculation around the PS6 ramps up, one thing is certain: Sony’s choice of AMD ensures that the next generation of gaming will bring new experiences and honor the legacy of PlayStation’s iconic past.
